Country overview
About Turkey
Turkey is a republic spanning south-eastern Europe and western Asia. Ankara is the capital; Istanbul is the largest city and the commercial centre. About 85 million people live here. It borders Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Iraq and Syria, with coasts on the Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Sea. Turkish is the official language. The currency is the lira (TRY).
Turkey is not a member of the European Union. It has a customs union with the EU for industrial goods and is a large domestic market in its own right. Istanbul is one of the principal commercial cities between Europe, the Caucasus and the Middle East. English is used in business in the larger cities. The legal system is civil law.
Brikseka forms Turkish companies. The usual vehicle is a limited şirket (Ltd. Şti.). One hundred percent foreign ownership is possible. A visit is sometimes required, particularly for tax-office registration, identification, or banking. No local director is required for a standard Ltd. Şti. Formation typically takes one to three weeks once the file is complete.
We then advise on a business bank account and on local payment processors such as iyzico and PayTR. Native Stripe is not available as a merchant account on a Turkish company. Turkish banks often require a tax number and presence in Turkey. Approvals are decided by the providers. If your aim is to live in Turkey, company formation is not a residence permit — that is a separate immigration file, which we also advise on.
