Country overview

About Sweden

Sweden is a constitutional monarchy in Northern Europe. Stockholm is the capital and the largest city. About 10.5 million people live here. It borders Norway and Finland, with a long Baltic coastline. Swedish is the official language. The currency is the krona (SEK), not the euro.

Sweden joined the European Union in 1995 and is in Schengen. It has not adopted the euro. It is one of the larger Nordic economies, with a substantial industrial, technology and services market centred on Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. English is widely used in business. The legal system is civil law.

Brikseka forms Swedish companies. The usual vehicle is an aktiebolag (AB). Share capital of SEK 25,000 is required. Board residency rules apply: at least half of the directors, and the managing director if one is appointed, must ordinarily be resident in the European Economic Area unless an exemption is granted. Company documents can often be prepared remotely; identification, banking, or immigration may still require travel.

We then advise on a business bank account and payment gateways such as Stripe and PayPal. Swedish banks are stricter where the board is not resident in Sweden. Approvals are decided by the providers. If your aim is to live in Sweden, company formation is not a residence permit — that is a separate immigration file, which we also advise on.

  • Company formation

We form an AB with share capital of SEK 25,000 and a board that meets Swedish residency rules, then stay with the file through banking and payments.

  • European Union

EU member since 1995 and in Schengen. The krona is the currency. A Swedish company sits inside the single market.

  • Stockholm and the Nordics

One of the larger Nordic markets, with Stockholm as the commercial centre and neighbours in Norway and Finland.

  • Tax setting

Corporate income tax is published at 20.6 percent. We confirm the live position before you proceed.

How we work

From briefing to a registered company

  1. Briefing

We review your business, the right entity for this country, costs, and whether a visit is likely.

  2. Company formation

Local counsel, notary where required, and the commercial register. We coordinate the documents through to a registered company.

  3. Banking and payments

After the company exists, we prepare applications for a business account and payment gateways.

  4. After incorporation

Statutory records, a named contact, and introductions to accounting so the company can operate.

After the company exists

Payment gateways

  • Stripe, subject to Stripe’s approval
  • PayPal Business, subject to PayPal’s approval

Operating stack

Business banking

  • Swedish banks are stricter for non-resident boards
  • Wise Business, opened in the company name, subject to Wise’s approval

Provider lists are indicative. We confirm current availability, government fees, and account-opening requirements during consultation.

Business Tools covers payment gateways, business accounts, email, websites, and related tools after the company exists.
