Country overview
About Latvia
Latvia is a republic on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea. Riga is the capital and the largest city. About 1.9 million people live here. It borders Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus and Russia. Latvian is the official language. The euro is the currency.
Latvia joined the European Union in 2004, Schengen in 2007, and the euro area in 2014. Riga is the principal Baltic port city and the country’s commercial centre. The economy is used as an EU operating base for services, logistics and regional trade among the Baltic states. The legal system is civil law.
Brikseka forms Latvian companies. The usual vehicle is a sabiedrība ar ierobežotu atbildību (SIA). No local director is required. Incorporation does not require a visit.
We then advise on a business bank account and payment gateways such as Stripe and PayPal. Approvals are decided by the providers. If your aim is to live in Latvia, company formation is not a residence permit — that is a separate immigration file, which we also advise on.
Company formation
We form an SIA at the Latvian register. Incorporation does not require a visit. We then stay with the file through banking and payments.
European Union and euro
EU member since 2004, in Schengen, and in the euro area since 2014. A Latvian company sits inside the single market and invoices in euro.
Riga and the Baltic
A Baltic EU member centred on Riga, with neighbours in Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus and Russia.
Tax setting
Latvia taxes corporate profits when they are distributed, not when they are retained. The published rate on distributions is 20 percent. We confirm the live position before you proceed.
How we work
From briefing to a registered company

We review your business, the right entity for this country, costs, and whether a visit is likely.
Company formation
Local counsel, notary where required, and the commercial register. We coordinate the documents through to a registered company.
Banking and payments
After the company exists, we prepare applications for a business account and payment gateways.
After incorporation
Statutory records, a named contact, and introductions to accounting so the company can operate.
After the company exists

- Stripe, subject to Stripe’s approval
- PayPal Business, subject to PayPal’s approval
Operating stack
Business banking
- Wise Business, opened in the company name, subject to Wise’s approval
